What is our distinct position in relation to these outfits — we emphasize our distinctive goal ‘to describe and measure the performance of libraries and their contribution to research, teaching and learning’, community building, association and value to our members above and beyond  — we are mission driven within a non-profit environment.  Our goals are: 1) relevance to policy issues, 2) credibility among data users and 3) trust among data providers (similar to the IMLS articulation of their mission).  We not only provide the infrastructure for conducting surveys but the services that are necessary to share lessons learned from the data collected as well as support and training for developing action agendas and implementation plans within an institution and across different groups of institutions.
